Frequently asked questions about tools
Which ECU tool should a workshop buy first?
For most workshops KESS3 is the safest first tool: it covers OBD, bench and boot in one unit and has the widest vehicle coverage, so you rarely have to turn a job away.
What is the difference between OBD, bench and boot?
OBD reads and writes through the diagnostic socket with the ECU in the car. Bench means the ECU is removed and powered on the bench. Boot goes directly to the microcontroller and is used when the ECU is locked or protected.
Is Autotuner faster than KESS3?
Autotuner is generally quicker on read and write times and strong on newer ECU generations, which matters most for workshops running high volume.
Do I need FLEX if I already have KESS3?
Only if you do a lot of bench and boot work on complex or locked ECUs. FLEX is the specialist choice there; for mixed everyday work KESS3 usually covers it.
Do I need a master or a slave version?
Workshops that order files from a file service need a slave version. A master is only needed if you write and encrypt your own files for other tuners.
Can I order tuning files without owning a tool?
No. You need a programming tool to read the original file from the vehicle and to write our file back.
